- Hair loss (androgenetic alopecia)
A third of men lose their hair prematurely and suffer: less self-esteem, depressive thoughts, etc. Despite these problems, they do nothing to start a treatment for baldness.
Why some men lose their hair at a very young age?
Androgenic alopecia or premature hair loss is extremely common for more than a third of the Dutch from the age of 18 suffer from it. Although multiple factors, genetic and hormonal components are very well known. The sex hormones may sometimes namely affect hair growth, and more particularly speed up the capillary cycle, whereby the hair follicles is exhausted. As a result, the growth of hair is getting slower and weaker, decreases and results in a progressive loss of the hair. There are treatments for baldness and they are effective, provided that they are started before it is too late.
But even if a premature hair loss is a problem that men, especially young men bothering and not properly handled, see few people a dermatologist. Usually the men react little, often wrong and too late if they are prematurely bald.
Hair loss causes problems
The results of a European survey conducted in 1,000 men aged 18 to 41 years, illustrate the magnitude of the problem outstanding. Within this population had 700 men suffer from premature hair loss, which accounts for 47% of this group:
- 43% of respondents suffer from less confidence in their physical charm;
- 42% are afraid of being bald;
- 37% are afraid to look older to look;
- 21% (one in five) have their hair loss as a result of signs of depression;
- 7% in treatment and three-quarters have never taken steps to address this problem;
- Men who have received treatment, say they are satisfied with the result and to have positive psychological effects, especially with regard to self-confidence.
What treatments for premature baldness are there?
There is one effective treatment for hair loss, which the hair loss may be delayed or put stop: Propecia (finasteride), orally (tablets) prevents the negative activity of androgens on hair follicles. It stops the loss of hair at 90% of the persons after one year of treatment.
Propecia is an agent for the treatment of androgenetic alopecia, also known as male pattern baldness. The active ingredient in Propecia is finasteride.
finasteride was put on the market at the beginning of the nineties, as a drug against prostate enlargement. It means that Proscar hot, in fact turned out to help with benign prostatic hyperplasia. However, in some of the subjects a particular side effect emerged, the fact proved to work as a hair restorer. For the treatment of the prostate disorder finasteride did not show extraordinary discovery. If hair restorer finasteride on the other hand was soon very popular. On May 1, 2003, the plea was in the Netherlands on the market as a hair restorer, under the name Propecia.
Men who deal with male pattern hair loss have a higher concentration of the male hormone DHT (dihydrotestosterone). The DHT hormone is produced in the male genitals using the so-called 5-alpha reductase enzyme. This enzyme is balding men in higher concentration present, non balding men. The substance finasteride binds to the 5-alpha-reductase type II enzyme, whereby testosterone which can not and thus there will be no conversion of testosterone in the place in front of the hair follicles pernicious DHT. Since the 5-alpha-reductase type II enzyme to 70% is responsible for the production of DHT, there will be many times less DHT come to the hair follicles, and hair loss will be significantly reduced.

What is Propecia (finasteride)?
Propecia is a drug to treat hair loss (alopecia androgentica). It is the only available means for the treatment of male pattern baldness. Propecia holds 90% against hair loss in men. Not only is proven that Propecia 1 tablet a day can stop hair loss, with two of the three men also promotes hair growth. Finasteride has been on the international market since 1992. It is available under the brand names Proscar and Propecia.
Operation Propecia (finasteride)
In the scalp, in particular, Propecia lowers the concentration of DHT, a substance that contributes to hair loss in men, by inhibiting an enzyme (5-alpha-reductase type 2). For example, Propecia contributes to the reversal of the process of hair loss, wherein the hair density increases again.
How arises hair loss?
As men age, hair growth can reduce the head. Usually begins at the crown and at the temples. The bald patches can spread slowly and in some cases this leads to complete baldness. This form of baldness is known as androgenetic alopecia.
It is assumed that its loss of the male type is caused by a combination of hereditary factors and a certain hormone, called dihydrotestosterone (DHT). DHT is the growth phase of the hair shorter and hair thinning. Hairs grow in the hair follicles. The operation of the hair follicles in the scalp is inhibited by dihydrotestosterone (DHT). Dihydrotestosterone is a hormone made by the body from testosterone. Finasteride inhibits the action of DHT. This allows the hair may grow back in places where growth had stopped earlier.
When I notice that Propecia works?
Patience is important. The hair growth cycle is slow, it takes at least 3 to 6 months before any effect is seen. Below, from six months to a year, one can expect that new hair starts to grow.
Is that everybody? No, the five-year study indicates that among men aged 18 to 41 years, 48% more hair gets, 42% have to do with stopping further hair loss and in 10% the hair loss continues.
If you stop the newly formed hairs disappear after six months to a year. If no result is achieved after 12 months, it is highly unlikely that Finasteride affects you.
Side effects Propecia (finasteride)
Like any drug Propecia may have unintended or undesirable effects. These side effects are rare, and most men do not bother. The side effects that may occur include; loss of libido, problems getting an erection, reduced ejaculation. However, after a five-year study showed that the dose of 1 mg Propecia tablets in less than 2% of men in a period of 12 months were affected. And in the course of the treatment this percentage increased further.
